Sustainability

Malama Hawai‘i is at the heart of all we brew.

Living in Hawai‘i, sustainability is not just something we talk about, it is our kuleana, and we incorporate it into every aspect of our lives. Here are ways Kona Brewing is doing our part

Harness the Sun

1200+ SOLAR PANELScapture sunshine in a can

At an average of 1.5 kWh per panel per day, this impressive array saves 1.3 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the Kona air.

JUST ONE HOUR OF SUNSHINE

generates 400kWh of energy, enough to produce and package over 1,000 gallons of beer.

That’s a lot of star power!

HIGH EFFICIENCY BREWING SYSTEM

The Mash Press conserves Water and grain using about 10% fewery resources that conventional brewing equipment.

RECYCLE WATER FROM BREWING

With our state-of-the-art water reclamation system, we are able to naturally treat wastewater to reuse it for landscape irrigation and cleaning, reducing our need for county-supplied water.

Spent Grain Feed From our Brewery

Pig and Cows, fed by beer biproducts.

The brewing mash is a nutritious food source for farm animals. The majority of spent grain is salvaged from our mash press and donated to local farmers - whatever remains is composted. One more way we are able to reduce our waste and promote a circular way of sustainable brewing!

KONA BREWING Hawaiʻi PUBS

Both of our Kona & Hawaiʻi Kai Pubs have been recognized by the Surfrider Foundation as Ocean Friendly Restaurants. The program certifies eateries’ commitments to reducing plastic waste and implementing ocean-friendly practices.

We are also proud to use locally sourced seafood wherever possible, including fresh fish from Ula'ula Fish Company at our Kona Pub.

Locally SourcedIngredients

A taste of Hawaiʻi

Shipping food to Hawaiʻi is costly, has a high carbon footprint, and usually takes days if not weeks. Wherever possible, we try to source from local growers and suppliers, helping to keep dollars here in our island economy while also reducing our impact on the environment.

One of those partners we are proud to work with is Kona born and raised expert waterman, Jeff Silva of Ulaʻula Fish Company. He has supplied our Kona Pub with fresh ahi for over 20 years for everything from our killer fish tacos to our ʻbroke da mouthʻ poke bowls.

Jeff is one of a dozen Hawaiʻi based fishermen, farmers, ranchers, and makers we work hand-in-hand with to showcase the abundance of these islands in our dishes and brews. From Kona grown coffee and vanilla to tropical fruits, greens, herbs and vegetables all picked by hand - we're grateful for those who work hard to provide us with key ingredients to give you a taste of our home!
